California Issues Moratorium Following the Palisades and Eaton Fires

Jan 16, 2025 / by AAIS

On January 9, 2025, the California Department of Insurance (CDI) released Bulletin 2025-1 to all admitted and non-admitted insurers in the state to issue a mandatory moratorium on the cancellation and nonrenewal of residential property insurance following the emergency declarations due to wildfires in certain counties.

No insurer should issue a notice of cancellation or nonrenewal due to wildfire risk for one year, starting on January 7, 2025, for the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire. The bulletin provides the ZIP codes to which the moratorium applies. Additionally, insurers must offer to rescind any notices of cancellation or nonrenewal that were issued due to wildfire risk since the emergency declarations.

Please see Bulletin 2025-1 for more information. For any questions regarding the bulletin, please contact Daniel Wade, Legal - Rate Enforcement Bureau, at Daniel.Wade@insurance.ca.gov.
