On December 15, 2025, the Alabama Department of Insurance (Department) issued Bulletin 2025-08, replacing Bulletin 2010-10 and prohibiting certain cancellations, nonrenewals, or premium increases.
Among other provisions, the bulletin states that effective January 1, 2026, insurers should not cancel or nonrenew a personal or commercial property insurance policy or automobile insurance policy if based solely on a claim arising from a catastrophe, natural disaster, act of nature, weather-related cause, or a loss arising from an event not affecting the line of business in which the policy is placed. Under the same parameters, for new policies written on or after February 1, 2026, and for policy renewals on or after April 1, 2026, insurers should not apply a premium surcharge or, if either action would result in a higher premium, offer to place the coverage in another rating tier or through an affiliated insurer.
Please see Bulletin 2025-08 for more information. For any questions regarding the bulletin, please contact the Department's Rate and Forms Division at rates.forms@insurance.alabama.gov.
