On September 14, 2023, the Hawaii Insurance Commissioner issued Commissioner's Memorandum 2023-5A regarding policyholders that were affected by the August 8, 2023, wildfires on Maui Island. The Commissioner recognizes that Additional Living Expenses (ALE) is often available for up to 12 months after the event, but is encouraging all insurers that provide residential property insurance in the state of Hawaii to extend that time period and provide at least 36 months of ALE.
The memo is directed to all insurers in the state of Hawaii that provide residential property insurance to areas that were affected by the August 8th wildfires.
The Hawaii Insurance Division will continue to provide updates on the situation on their website here.
