On August 13, 2026, Indiana Governor Braun declared a statewide disaster emergency following recent severe weather that began on August 11, 2026, and continued for days after. On August 17, 2026, the Indiana Department of Insurance issued Bulletin 280 to all insurance companies to request a moratorium for any policyholder affected by the severe weather.
The bulletin calls on all companies to implement a 60-day moratorium on the cancellation of any insurance policy for policyholders directly affected by the severe weather, and a suspension of any penalty attached to a late payment. The moratorium applies to cancellations and nonrenewals that are attributed to the failure to pay premiums as a direct result of the severe weather.
