California Issues Moratorium Following Wildfires

Aug 15, 2024 / by AAIS

On August 8, 2024, the California Department of Insurance (CDI) released Bulletin 2024-6 to all admitted and non-admitted insurers in the state to issue a mandatory moratorium on the cancellation and nonrenewal of residential property insurance following the emergency declarations due to wildfires in certain counties.

No insurer should issue a notice of cancellation or nonrenewal due to wildfire risk for one year, starting on July 26, 2024, for the Gold Complex Fire and the Park Fire, and starting on July 30, 2024, for the Borel Fire. The bulletin provides the ZIP codes to which the moratorium applies. Additionally, insurers must offer to rescind any notices of cancellation or nonrenewal that were issued due to wildfire risk since the emergency declarations.

Please see Bulletin 2024-6 for more information. For any questions regarding the bulletin, please contact Daniel Wade, Legal - Rate Enforcement Bureau, at Daniel.Wade@insurance.ca.gov.
