California Issues Moratorium Following Thompson Fire

Jul 22, 2024 / by AAIS

On July 11, 2024, the California Department of Insurance (CDI) issued Bulletin 2024-5 to put in place a mandatory moratorium after a state of emergency was declared following the Thompson Fire.

The bulletin states that no admitted or non-admitted insurer should issue a notice of cancellation or nonrenewal for residential property insurance policies due to wildfire risk in the ZIP codes provided. The moratorium will last one year, starting on July 3, 2024. If any insurers to which the moratorium applies have issued a notice of cancellation or nonrenewal since the declaration of a state emergency on July 3, 2024, they must offer to rescind those notices.

Please see Bulletin 2024-5 for more information. For any questions regarding the bulletin, please contact Daniel Wade, Legal - Rate Enforcement Bureau, at Daniel.Wade@insurance.ca.gov.
