California Issues Moratorium Following the Shelly and Bear Fires

Nov 12, 2024 / by AAIS

On November 8, 2024, the California Department of Insurance (CDI) issued Bulletin 2024-12 to all admitted and non-admitted insurers in the state, mandating a moratorium on the cancellation and nonrenewal of residential property insurance following the emergency declarations due to the Shelly and Bear fires.

No insurer should issue a notice of cancellation or nonrenewal due to wildfire risk for one year, starting on November 1, 2024. The bulletin provides the ZIP codes to which the moratorium applies. Additionally, insurers must offer to rescind any notices of cancellation or nonrenewal that were issued due to wildfire risk since the emergency declarations proclaimed earlier this month.

Please see Bulletin 2024-12 for more information. For any questions regarding the bulletin, please contact Daniel Wade, Legal - Rate Enforcement Bureau, at Daniel.Wade@insurance.ca.gov.
